.awakening the feminine.

There’s something opening up inside of me, an awareness of the layers I hold that I sometimes forget about and others I’m beginning to see.

A few weeks ago I went to a Quoya dance class, in the class there are opportunities to share any thoughts or feelings with someone next to you after particular dance sequences. When it was time share I was next to a tired mom of two boys, she started crying to me about feeling disconnected from her body. Since she had her first son shed felt she lost herself and didn't really know who she was because of this disconnect. I felt so honored that she shared with me something so raw and in the same moment I feel this alignment inside of myself - like she was a reminder of my journey and the reason I am here (preparing for a massage program). I want to work with women to connect/reconnect with themselves to have embodied awareness.

On summer solstice I had to opportunity to go to a very special women’s circle honoring the season of the Queen. It was a ritual-based workshop that offered opportunities for all the women to claim their place as a Queen. It felt weird and silly at first and then as I left go of my judgement I realized the power of ritual and sharing intentional space with women. It also reminded me of my journey - in actively honoring myself and the women whom which I have relationships.

I was reminded recently of the author Sue Monk Kidd. I forgot how much I appreciate and connect with her work. I remember reading “Traveling with Pomegranates” years ago, it's a Mother/Daughter memoir of travels to the Mediterranean and interweaves the story of transitioning to in life/relationship with greek mythology and travel. She talks about reconnecting with herself - evolving into a new version of herself, the rite of passage she is journeying as a women/mother and her relationship with the imagine of the virgin/goddess. Her talking about the virgin (goddess) made me think of a trip I took with my Dad about 7 years ago to the Southwest. I had dreamt of the Southwest for years. Finally arriving to New Mexico it felt just as magical as I imagined. The town plaza of Las Cruces, the dried chilies, arid landscapes and Guadalupe + Virgin Mary everywhere. I remember walking up to the church in the plaza and feeling overwhelmed by the presence of the stark white Virgin Mary, not in a religious way but in a sacred feminine way. The power of feminine was slowly slowly awakening inside of me. I had returned from the Peace Corps, attended Doula training and was visiting a Midwifery program in Texas. It was an important time in which I was connecting to my feminine, claiming it, exploring it and there she was illuminated with a ring of pink roses at her feet and the brilliant blue sky of the desert. I’m so grateful I still have a picture of her and some others sightings on the trip.

There’s also a lot of growing pains happening in my life right now, situations that are stretching me and challenging me to really look in the mirror at myself. In one of these situations a deep anger came up inside of me - it came quickly. I couldn’t anticipate it until it just released itself. This deep anger comes from my reaction to the choices of others - not allowing myself to speak my truth or trust myself enough to make an embodied choice.

I went to yoga this morning and realized that with all the moving parts in my life: the frustration, the anger, the fear, the disappointments most of it is just projection to avoid looking in the mirror. If I allow myself to slow down, let go of some of my expectations (that can just be me using perfection to hide from vulnerability) and dedicate time and energy to accept and love myself more, then everything else are just passing teachers. These teachers might bring discomfort with their teachings but not deep anger. The crying mother, the ritual of the Queen and the reminder of the Goddess are all parts of me. They are all reminders of this journey to accept myself.

The forever journey.

.the hero's journey.

On this day 6 years ago I got a plane bright and early in the morning vibrating with excitement and paralyzed with fear - I was headed to Malawi for 9 months with the Peace Corps as a Response Volunteer.

Today I was walking on my favorite trail, it winds thru the trees and curves around tiny lakes - it's my favorite place to think. I was listening to this podcast and this with Oprah and Liz Gilbert, discussing the Hero's Journey and how people who have been conditioned as women have been told this isn't their journey, the hero's journey and from this understanding we (women) don't always know or take agency of our lives or the direction of our journey. We wait for it to come to us. So many women have followed their role models - their Mothers, Aunts, Grandmas who grew up and got married and had babies and built a home. That is the journey. We follow this journey because the women we love lived this journey and they are strong and wise and beautiful - but this isn't everyone's journey.

I thought about my journey. I didn't follow my Nana's journey - I didn't follow my Mom's journey. I find myself on the other side of Oprah and Liz's experience. I was given the love + support to live a journey that is very far from my Nana + Mom. They encouraged me to go + learn + seek + find in ways they never had the freedom too. I'm so grateful for that. But I wonder if I am, even on the other side facing the same dilemma - while living a free journey I have felt lost without role models to show me how to live this journey - how to embrace and receive the freedom.

Whether we are following the women of our family or traveling new pathways we have to check into our own authenticity. What do we really want our journey to be? AND are you able to see ourselves as deserving enough to have it?

The  podcast goes on to tell a story of one of  Liz's close friends who on her 40th birthday made a ceremony for herself to release the bride, to release the expectation she held that in order to be the person she wanted and have the life she wanted she had to get married, so she released it. It's a powerful story. I started thinking about what I would release.

What have I been carrying around with me?

Immediately the words dropped into my head - I have to release the pressure + idea of a perfect life. I don't know how to navigate this journey of freedom + exploration. I wasn't given role models. It's been the most beautiful journey so far and I am so grateful for every moment of it - high/low good/bad fulfilling/draining lonely/connected quiet/loud BUT it is what is needs to be. It doesn't have to be perfect (right) - there is no perfect (right) town - there is no perfect (right) job - there is no perfect (right) choice. Allow myself to take agency of a freedom that the women in my life haven't had. Stay curious to new ways instead of holding onto fear without a clear role model of the unknown. Don't listen to fear - perfect is just fear dressed up in a nice outfit as Liz says!

I'm so curious about how + why people make choices! I'm thinking now it's been a way for me to try to gather data on how humans navigate this journey whether be it with role models that didn't live the journeys they feel called to or living a journey that has no role model. I want to hear + collect these stories. The stories of the Hero's Journey.

I wonder if you've thought about your journey?
I wonder what you would release?

.reminder.

I received such a kind e-mail today from someone who was gifted one of my bracelets for Christmas. She told me the bracelet brought her so much joy and she wears it daily. Her compliment just reenergized me and I was so grateful to receive her words - but - I thought why do I wait (rely) on those outside compliments to remind myself of my value? I know the value (beauty) of my work. Each piece of my jewelry is a long intimate journey of processing something occurring in my life in that moment. I design - fabricate - finish - each unique and one-of-a-kind.

Why can't I grasp it's beauty until someone from the outside describes it?

This moment was such a good reminder of how so often I forget myself - my story. This process of remembering who I am - who we are over and over again. I pledge to continue to jump inside myself this year!

How do you remember your unique story?

.day three.

I woke up feeling sick today - I felt it coming yesterday, the last few days. I am so frustrated to be sick when all I want it is to be out exploring, meeting people and digesting all the colors - texture - sounds. I text my Mom my frustrations and she reminded me of the lesson that seems to be reappearing in my life, she said "just surrender to it." I know. I need to surrender to a lot of things - this year, this little town, this project, the hold of the past, my expectations...I'm laying in bed drinking tea with my balcony doors open to the street below - just surrender.

It's so hard for me to just be but if I am going to be influenced and changed by this place and the next few weeks I have to surrender to its plan/journey/process for me.

.Finding my story.

I met an artist at CraftBoston - a sweet kind spirit - her art evoked such a reaction within me. She is a metalsmith/jewelry designer but her pieces were stories to me, they transported me to somewhere else. I've never experienced this with jewelry. I told her I was so inspired by her art and she said,

- We just have to make our art and put it out there - some people are going to get it (appreciate it) and others won't even look our way - but we have to be true to ourselves - these are the stories that are inside of me -

I just keep running her words through my mind - wondering

What is my story?
What do I need to tell?
How will I tell it?

.big magic.

“Do whatever brings you to life, then. Follow your own fascinations, obsessions, and compulsions. Trust them. Create whatever causes a revolution in your heart.”
― Elizabeth GilbertBig Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear

I've been reading lately. I started reading "Big Magic" by Elizabeth Gilbert, it's so good. It always gives me something the chew on - Liz loves talking about ideas and how ideas manifest/present/move. She has an amazing story about her and her friend Ann Patchett. Read the book for the full story, but I'll just say Liz's story led me to Ann's book "State of Wonder" a book that takes place in Brazil deep in the amazon rainforest. The book instantly pulled me in with images that ran through my mind like a movie. I was surprised that I was so enthralled by this book and then I realized why, I've been to the amazon rainforest. The Ecuador side not the Brazilian and not as deep into isolation as where the story takes place but I've been there - I felt that heavy air - the deep exhaustion in your bones from the humidity - the smells of soil/fruit/animals - felt the roads that bounce you up and down on the seat for hours - travelled deep into the jungle in an old wooden boat with so many leaks a small child was hired to scoop out buckets of water entering the boat - the size of everything - the tarantulas - not going out after dark without a local because of snakes - the story of piranhas and candiru fish in the river - the wild and free amazon. It seems like it was just a strange magical dream that happened years ago.

How quick am I to forget my beautiful journey/story! I am so amazed and grateful for my path/opportunities. I hope I continue to remember my story and to find the power within it.

What's your story? What have you forgotten?

.6 years apart.

I just realized its been 6 years to the day since I returned from Ecuador - the emotions swelled up inside of me and crashed inside like that most incredible wave - taking my breath away (knocking the wind of out me for a moment) - the nostalgia. The joy - the sorrow of 27 months of my life from which it all pivoted - revealed - altered - destroyed - rejuvenated. Ecuador ripped my soul to shreds - broke my heart/spirit/body in ways I didn't know were possible. It left me washed up on the shore with no strength to get up or knowledge of where to go - so I rested for a while - I wondered if I'd ever find the strength to stand up but I did get up - I pulled myself up because I had no other way - option

I wandered for a good while - I followed people/signs/flashed of light - aimless until I realize that all that weakness/wounds/sorrow were the greatest gifts - ripping me free from myself - from the narrow world i'd known. Everything was open to me. My broken heart was an expanding heart.  My lost mind was my freedom. This journey is so much more complex - rich - vibrant than I could've even imagined.

Ecuador I am forever grateful
for you
you changed my life
it's been 6 years and I think
i've only began to understand
our journey together.

From my last blog post in Ecuador, August 5th 2009:

"Ecuador has become home, not easily but it has and that it what has made the end of this time so beautiful, all the struggle that I encountered along the way. I’ve seen so much; I’ve been shocked, surprised, devastated, infuriated, elated making it impossible to tell you how my life is going to change and has changed. But my ambitious wish is that my actions will be the example of the changes. That I won’t even for a moment forget this life, the voices, the smells, the struggle, or the heartache. I hope to always be afflicted by the voices and the faces of those born into injustice. That the small amount of exposure you’ve had from my journey has given you a glimpse of Ecuador, a vibrant country full of wonders and struggle and from which I’ve realized despite how great our differences may seem our few commonalities will always hold us together, as one race.

So to you all I send you my love and gratitude for sharing this journey with me. I give thanks to pachamama and the people that showed me the immense beauty in life's simplicities."

.full moon in sagittarius.

A beautiful challenging journey just ended for me Tuesday night on the full moon in Sagittarius. Sometimes life can be so confusing and then these delicately poetic moments appear. That was Tuesday night. Surrounded by my family of teens that I have spent the last 9 months with - growing and learning together it was like a beautiful empowering birth that gave all those moments of confusion meaning, I just couldn't see it at the time.

So grateful for this journey I am on and all the transitions that give me so much energy and love when I let go of them. I tend to associate time with success or longevity with success so experiences like this, 9 months seem like they need more - more time - more purpose - more substance but that's not true. Time has no correlation with value. I don't have the words to express what it was like to sit in a space with these beautiful beings last night and hear them share stories of being inspired by one another. People that outside of this space would have no connection to each other - they all represent such different worlds and yet here right here they all opened up challenged themselves - made themselves vulnerable to experience life in such a big way at 16-17-18 year olds! To dive blindly off that cliff. The determination and passion of humans is such an astounding gift to experience. I have the honor of watching these individuals blindly jump off of a cliff and figure out how to land. I am most grateful for these months/moments and for the calming reassurance that this is my path this is my journey- to find a challenge surrender to it. To build community - challenge norms and live my truth!!

Happy full moon (a few days late!!) to you! I hope this dreamy moon is highlighting all the beauty in your truths.

.the journey.

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice – – –
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
‘Mend my life!’
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.

You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations – – –
though their melancholy
was terrible. It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.

But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice,
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do – – – determined to save
the only life you could save.
